 Music Gear Builders Group Meeting
On Sunday the 22nd in Hoboken NJ, I joined a group of fellow builders to talk space, show off some cool gear, shoot the breeze, and jam out a bit.  All good fun - and here are some assorted highlights.  Enjoy!

Magnificent Renovation -
A photo of one of many warehouse buildings being transformed into apartments in the Northern Liberties.  This one would be great as one open room!

An unlucky frog gets launched into the air by the exhaust blast of the Minotaur 5 rocket carrying NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer probe bound for the moon.

Channeling Townshend
Here is a confession.....  everything that I have ever played on guitar is a rip off of Pete Townshend.  Even when I am ripping off James Taylor I am really ripping off Taylor ripping off Townshend.  It's true.  I am but a lowly minion of the great one.  So here is a spontaneous improvised piece in the style of Pete Townshend.  Sort of.  I hear Taylor in there too....

NASA's Voyager 1 is in Interstellar Space!

The historic announcement was made on September 12 that Voyager 1 (launched in 1977, and after having flown by Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus in a trajectory known as The Grand Tour) had exited the Heliosphere about 9 years ago, and had since been traveling through the Termination Shock, which is the region where our Sun's solar wind fights against the denser interstellar plasma, within the galactic magnetic field.  Based on the data it is thought that Voyager 1 exited the solar system in August, and has been in interstellar space for about a month.  It is thought that Voyager will continue to transmit data from the interstellar regions for at least another 7 years, and at some time after that point the plutonium reactor will cease to provide enough power to operate the onboard systems.

A little fun yesterday - goofing off on the guitar.

Yesterday I watched the President's address to the nation about Syria, and it is sad that the world continues to have these endless and senseless conflicts.  It is Patriot Day in the US, 12 years since the day that changed our society, and brought the US into two very long wars.  The reverberations are still felt as we continue to see atrocities and unrest abroad - the constant affirmations of man's inevitable inhumanity to mankind.

For me the events in September 2001 were quite a personal experience, as I recalled those days in New York in a chapter from my unpublished autobiography: "Apocalypse on a Tuesday"

I recently got a nod in MAKE Magazine issue 34 about my video, "Ask Fran: Build Your Own Friction Welder!".  It seems that others have been finding new ways to use friction welding, even in expanding the ever growing realm of 3-D printing. Click the image to read a preview!
